We were invited to the launching event of The City, a new interactive playground in Liang Court. The City is made up of several learning stations where children can role play, try out different professions and learn through play.
It was quite chaotic at the beginning because there were just too many children running around at the same time and a lot of them were unsupervised, so those particular ones were grabbing, pushing, throwing things on the floor and generally being a pain. It got much better when the crowds thinned out a little.
Anya had a great time at The City and she was really happy to try on the various costumes and to role play at the different learning stations. Her favourite bits were the heroes area, where she could build things with huge construction blocks, and the clinic.
I liked that the supermarket is stocked with items that the kids are familiar with and get to see when they go grocery shopping with their parents. The clinic also had some of these nice little touches with the medication in the cabinet.
I’m a little concerned about the sharp corners on the furniture because The City is for kids between 3 and 8 years old and the younger ones are generally still quite accident-prone. The ride-on toy cars can also be a bit of a hazard because the kids can go pretty fast on them and knock down other children or squash their toes. It would be good if there can be more supervision from the staff, especially with the unruly kids who haven’t been taught to look out for other people.
Overall, I think The City is a fun place with many opportunities for kids to be creative and imaginative if it’s not too crowded. I’ll probably visit again with Anya but we’ll aim for a time when it’s likely to be less packed.
Admission charges for unlimited play in The City are $22 for kids from 3-8 years old, $18 for those below 3 years old and free for adults & babies under 1 year. The City is at #03-04A Liang Court, 177 River Valley Rd, Singapore 179030. Tel: 62506507. Open daily from 10am-8pm.
