We went to check out Dong Po Colonial Cafe at Kandahar St last Saturday. It specialises in retro cakes and pastries as well as the usual traditional breakfast consisting of kaya toast and such.
Firstly, the good things: the baked goods were fresh and yummy. We had an orange lamington and a scone while we were there and they were both good. The butter sugar toast that we ordered was also nicely toasted with the right combination of butter and sugar. We bought a jam tart, pineapple tart and three hole cookie to go and those were delicious too.
The not-so-good parts: perhaps it was our timing but the service was way too slow. We saw many unhappy faces, people complaining that they had been waiting a long time for their orders and even a couple who demanded their money back before leaving in a huff. Our drinks took quite a while to come and we had to wait a little bit more before the butter sugar toast arrive and our eggs only appeared after 2 reminders (and it was too undercooked to be edible).
I think they need to reorganise their preparation area and have a better, more efficient system. Beverages should be made on the spot once they are ordered. They should pick up some tips from the established chains like Ya Kun and Killiney Kopitiam. The staff didn’t look very sure about which table to deliver the food to so I think they need to issue number tags to customers so that orders go to the right people.
The cafe has promise and the food is good so hopefully they will be able to clean up their act!
