Maxilla – Review & Giveaway!

Our current bedtime read is Maxilla by Lianne Ong with illustrations by Shing. Maxilla is a meaningful story about a boy, Reuben, who finds a beautiful caterpillar, but has to choose between keeping her and releasing her back into her natural habitat.

The book encourages kids to think about the possible consequences of their actions, and the importance of making the right decision even when it’s not easy to do so. After reading the book, the kids and I had a good time discussing why it was difficult for Reuben to make the right decision and applying it to relevant scenarios from their own experience.

Anya was also reminded of her visits to the Butterfly Park & Insect Kingdom on Sentosa and the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity & Research where she saw many butterflies as well as other insects on display. Reading the story and looking at the illustrations have gotten the kids more interested in the life cycle of a butterfly and its natural habitat and give them a new perspective about the beauty of every living creature.

The missus is thinking of bringing the boys to visit Oh’s Farm Butterfly Lodge. This would make a great companion read before and after the visit.
