I have fond memories of watching Cirque du Soleil’s Saltimbanco more than 10 years ago when I was still in university. I couldn’t get the performance out of my head for days afterwards and till today, it remains one of the most impressive and remarkable performances I have ever seen.
And now, Cirque du Soleil returns to Singapore with an breathtaking production presented in the signature blue-and-yellow Big Top. TOTEM traces the fascinating journey of the human species from its original amphibian state to its ultimate desire to fly. The cast features 46 circus artists, actors, musicians and singers from 17 countries performing an awesome collection of astonishing acrobatic acts.
From the moment the crystal man descended from the ceiling, I could not take my eyes off the stage. Anya was so excited to see a “human disco ball” and was completely absorbed for the duration of the show, occasionally turning to me with an awestruck expression on her face.
Anya chuckled at the lighthearted comic routines that took place between the acrobatic arts and was fascinated by the sight of acrobats on unicycles balancing bowls on their heads while also throwing and catching the bowls with great precision. It’s hard to say which segments were my favourite because everything was truly so amazing but the trapeze and rollerskates acts took my breath away.
With mind-blowing acrobatic performances recalling scenes from the story of evolution, Cirque du Soleil’s TOTEM explores the ties that bind Man to other species, his dreams and his infinite potential. During the curtain call, the performers received a well-deserved standing ovation from the audience. This is a show not to be missed.
